Living With An Advantage

by Rick

Today we continue our series entitled, “Back to the Bible,” with Part 33.  We have been looking at Psalm 119.  Let’s continue to walk through this amazing psalm.  Today we will look at verses 98-100 from The Passion Bible Translation.

David said:

(v.98)  By considering your commands I have an edge over my enemies, for I take seriously everything you say.

(v.99)  You have given me more understanding than those who teach me, for I’ve absorbed your eye-opening revelation.

(v.100)  You have graced me with more insight than the old sages because I have not failed to walk in the light of your ways.

So what does this mean to you today?  A few things.

1.  The Word of God gives you an advantage over those who do not live by it.  David said, “By considering your commands I have an edge over my enemies, for I take seriously everything you say.” (Psalm 119:98 TPT)

a)  In the Old Testament one of the roles the Priests filled was that of intercessor or intermediary between God and man.  The Priest would stand before the people to hear their concerns and then take those concerns to God. In like manner, he would stand before God, hear would God had to say, and then go back to communicate to the people what God said.  Under this system there was one tribe of Priests and 11 tribes of kings or leaders. The Priest was supposed to tell the kings/leaders what God said, and the kings/leaders would then go out and do battle WITH THE ADVANTAGE of having heard from God.  This advantage would help them WIN in life and they turned around and brought back a portion of the spoils (or income) back to the Priests as an offering. The point I am making here is that when you hear from heaven you have an advantage over those who do not, and that advantage gives you the upper-hand when doing battle (Old Testament) or business (present day) in this world.

b)  David acknowledged the fact that he had an advantage over his enemies because he had access to God’s words.  What was true for David is true for you. When you read and apply God’s truth it gives you a clear advantage over those who don’t.

c)  In business today many leaders and corporations hire consultants.  They do so because they believe the information they will receive from the consultants will give them an advantage when attempting to win critical business.  As a sitting King, David was saying that the best consultant you can secure is God Himself. His consultation is free. His counsel is made readily available in His Word.  If you read it and you base your decisions on it, you will have an advantage in business and in life.

2.  God is the greatest teacher.  David said, “You have given me more understanding than those who teach me, for I’ve absorbed your eye-opening revelation.  You have graced me with more insight than the old sages because I have not failed to walk in the light of your ways.” (Psalm 119:99 & 100 TPT)

a)  King David did not have the benefit of attending the best schools.  He was not educated like Moses or Paul. David attended the school of the Spirit.  He learned directly from God and his education was sealed in real-life experience. This being his background, he unreservedly acknowledged the fact that the revelation he received from God was greater than any education he could have ever received from man.  Divine revelation from God gave David an advantage in life as he attempted to maximize his purpose and potential while he was in the land of the living. God’s divine revelation will do the same for you.

b)  Don’t dismiss education, but don’t ever value education over revelation.  One Word from God can teach you more than years in school ever could.

c)  When you absorb and apply God’s Word and the revelation you receive by God’s Spirit, you will operate in a level of wisdom that far exceeds your age, education and training.  I am witness. When you walk with God and apply His Word, people with education that far exceeds yours will come to you for the answers.

Closing Confession:

Father, this is a season of expectation for me.  I have decided to base my decisions on Your Word.  I live by Your truth. I am led of Your Spirit in all things.  I receive Your wisdom, revelation, insight, knowledge and understanding daily.  This gives me and advantage in life. I enter this day ready to WIN, knowing that I am equipped with wisdom that far exceeds my age, education and training.  As I say what You tell me to say and do what You lead me to do, I will be the one with all the answers! And when people come to me, I will then tell them that I got the answers from You!  I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

This is Today’s Word.  Apply it and prosper!
