The Curse

by Rick

(Prov 26:2 ERV)  Don’t worry when someone curses you for no reason.  Nothing bad will happen.  Such words are like birds that fly past and never stop.

This morning we get back to our series entitled, “Unlocking the Power of Proverbs – Walking in the Wisdom of God.”  In Solomon’s day witches and sorcerers were as commonplace as prophets and priests.  I don’t know why many Christians claim not to believe in spiritual power outside of God, but the power of darkness is all throughout scripture.  When Moses threw down his rod and the Lord made it turn into a serpent, Pharaoh’s sorcerers were able to replicate the act.  Of course, Moses’ serpent ate the others, but the point is that the kingdom of darkness does yield power.  Fast forward a few thousand years from Moses to Jesus and we see Jesus delivering all sorts of people from spiritual bondage.  One time Jesus encountered a woman who was bent over and could not stand up straight.  She had been this way for 18 years.  Was it because of a terrible accident?  No.  Was it some sort of hereditary disease?  No.  It was an evil spirit and as soon as Jesus cast the spirit out the woman was able to stand up straight and walk away delivered.  (see Luke 13:11-17).

Another time Jesus encountered a father who was at his wit’s end.  The father had a boy who routinely experienced what sounded like epileptic seizures and the boy was suffering greatly.  Because of his seizures the young man had fallen into fire (getting burned) and water (nearly drowning) and his father brought him to Jesus in hope of miracle.  The father wanted his boy healed.  But when Jesus addressed the issue he did not address the symptom (what seemed like epilepsy), Jesus addressed the root.  The root of the matter was spiritual, not physical.  The boy was demon possessed.  Jesus cast the demon out of the boy and he was healed from that moment (see Mat 17:14-22).

I share these with you to drive home the fact that spiritual curses (birthed from the power of darkness) are real.  Just like the Blessing is real (which comes from God), curses can be real as well.  But the good news is that satan can’t curse what God has blessed.  Another translation of this verse reads: “The curse cannot come without a cause.”  I can’t give you the entire story this morning, but please read Numbers 22 and 23 when you get a chance.  In those chapters you will read of how the king of Moab (Balak) hired a prophet (Balaam) to curse the Israelites.  Balaam was not a follower of Jehovah, but he did attempt to have a conversation with the true and living God.  After the conversation Balaam came back and asked Balak: “How can I curse whom God has not cursed?  How can I damn whom GOD has not damned?”  In other words, the Israelites (at least at this point) had not done anything to leave a door open for the curse to come.  And the curse, without a cause, could not come.

So what does this mean to you today?  A few things:

1.  Just like the power of God is real, the power of satan is real.

2.  The kingdom of darkness cannot touch you without a cause.  However, it can touch you with one.  Many people are susceptible to spiritual darkness because of things they have done, and even things their parents may have done.  Whatever the case, satan never gets a foothold in someone’s life without help.

3.  Once you are delivered from the power of darkness and you shut the door to satan and his kingdom, then no curse, hex, vex, spell or work of divination has any power over you!

Closing Confession: Father, I thank You for translating me from the kingdom of darkness, into the Kingdom of Your dear Son.  I thank You for calling me out of darkness, into Your marvelous light.  I thank You for my second-birth; for being Born-Again of Your Spirit and for then ascending me in spiritual places and seating me at Your right hand with Christ Jesus.  Lastly Father, I thank You for breaking the power of every hex, vex, spell, or curse that a witch, warlock, wizard, physic, or sorcerer has every spoken over me or my lineage.  I declare, by faith, that I am free from all bondage and I shut the door, forever, to satan and his kingdom.  The curse does not come without a cause and I WILL NOT be the cause of the curse in my life or in the lives of my children.  I declare this in boldness, BY FAITH!  In Jesus’ name.  Amen!
