(Prov 26:17 CEV) It’s better to take hold of a mad dog by the ears than to take part in someone else’s argument.
This morning we continue our series entitled, “Unlocking the Power of Proverbs – Walking in the Wisdom of God.” In the original language the sense is given that Solomon is talking about a “passer-by.” This is someone who simply passes by a couple who is involved in and intense argument and decides to get involved. While the argument is clearly none of the person’s business, he/she is simply attempting to be a ‘good Samaritan’ and help bring peace to the situation. However, since the passer-by has no knowledge of the situation, no information concerning the argument, and no clue as to what started it or why it has escalated to the level that it has, then there is little that he/she can do. Solomon warns us from doing this, because in most cases it is seen as meddling, and since the people involved in the argument are already embroiled with passion, the chances are high that they will lash back at you and it will make the overall situation worse (not better).
The original language also gives the connotation of dog being a passer-by as well, or a stray dog. Solomon likens the situation of a stranger ignorantly getting involved in an argument that is none of his business to a person walking up to strange (or stray) dog and pulling it by the ears. Most dog ears are short, difficult to be held, and tender; and therefore cannot bear the pressure of being held by them. Most dogs, especially stray dogs, will get provoked by this and seek to bite the person doing it.
So there you have two situations. In one a complete stranger gets involved in a passionate argument that he/she has no clue about and in the other a person grabs a stray dog by the ears. No good will come out of either situation. The person who grabs the stray dog by the ears should expect to be bitten and so it is with the person who needlessly involves him or herself in something they should not; especially when they are ill-prepared to actually be of any help.
So what does this mean to you today? A few things:
1. Don’t expose yourself to needless hazards.
2. Be led of God in all things; especially when dealing with strangers.
3. Don’t offer unwarranted interference, unless you are positive the Lord is leading you to do so.
4. The right thing, done the wrong way, can become the wrong thing.
Closing Confession: Father, I thank You for Your supernatural wisdom. Your wisdom is amazingly practical. If I had operated in Your wisdom in the past I could have avoided many of the mistakes I have already made. But from this day forward, I declare by faith, that I will operate in Your wisdom daily. Furthermore, I shall be led of Your Spirit in all things. You lead, guide, and direct me daily. Jesus only did those things He saw You do and He only said those things He heard You say. I want to be like Jesus. I will walk with You and You will walk with me. You speak to me and I obey Your voice. This way I know what I should get involved in and what I should simply stay out of. I thank You in advance, by faith, for leading me daily! In Jesus’ name. Amen!
