Being in Position to Hear God

by Rick

This morning we continue our series entitled, “Refined Focus”, with a mini-series within it entitled “Focusing on the Word”.  We are walking our way through the first half of the first psalm.  Let’s get back to it.  The Bible says:

(Psalm 1:1-3 KJV) “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

(Psalm 1:1-3 ERV) “Great blessings belong to those who don’t listen to evil advice, who don’t live like sinners, and who don’t join those who make fun of God.  Instead, they love the Lord’s teachings and think about them day and night.  So they grow strong, like a tree planted by a stream—a tree that produces fruit when it should and has leaves that never fall.  Everything they do is successful.”

There is so much revelation in the Word that it sometimes takes me weeks to walk through a few verses.  That is certainly the case here.  We are weeks into studying the 1st Psalm.  Today we go back to the line: “in his law doth he meditate day and night”, or “think about them day and night.”

So what does this mean to you today?  Today I will focus in on the fact that when you meditate God’s Word day and night, you are in position to hear what He is saying.

  1.  The Word of God is full of revelation.  However, when you first read a verse or a passage you are simply reading at the surface-level.  When you meditate what you read over and over, it’s as if you are digging deeper and deeper.  Like a miner digging for gold, when you meditate the Word of God you will find hidden treasure that is not available on the surface.

  1.  When you meditate God’s Word over and over and over again, the Holy Spirit will begin to unpack, unfold and unveil layers and layers of revelation from the Word you are meditating.  You will begin to see old scripture in a new way.

  1.  Some people don’t read the Bible because they don’t see the relevance.  They see the Bible as a history book, full of old stories.  They are missing out – BIG TIME!  The Bible is not a history book to study, but rather a life-book to live.  When you meditate the Word day and night you will begin to see the Word behind the words, you will hear the Voice behind the voices, and it will seem like the words LEAP off the pages.

  1.  The Word of God can come ALIVE in your heart, but this type of experience does not happen with cursory reading.  This does not happen during a three or four minute “mandatory reading”.  No, this happens when you take the time to meditate the Word day and night.  If you have never meditated God’s Word, you don’t know what you are missing.  Try it today!

  1.  When you meditate God’s Word you will be amazed how much you can hear His voice.  You might be meditating a verse or a passage that has nothing to do with what you are going through, but when you meditate His Word you put yourself in position to hear His voice, and at that point He can give you the answers you have been looking for.  You may be meditating a Word on marriage and He will give you an answer to the financial issue you are facing.  You may be meditating a Word on grace and He will give you an answer to the situation you are facing with one of your children.  The point is that when you meditate the Word of God you are in position to HEAR from Him.  At that point you will hear what you need to hear.

  1.  Today everyone is busy.  Most people have more task than time.  Most people have no ‘white space’ on their calendars.  But if you want to be productive while you are being busy, it behooves you to meditate and medicate on the Word of God.  The more you do, the more you will be able to hear God’s voice and when you are being led of God you will be amazed how much you can get done.

Closing Confession:   Father, this is a season of refined focus for me.  I bring my life into focus this year by focusing on Your Word.  I want to hear what You are saying to me every day.  I do not live by bread only.  I live by every Word that proceeds from out of Your mouth.  So I meditate and medicate on Your Word day and night.  The more I read what You said, and the more I meditate it, the better positioned I am to hear what you are saying to me every day.  One Word from You can provide the answer to any situation.  So thank You Father for speaking to me daily.  I am busy, but I MAKE TIME to SPEND TIME with You.  As I do You speak to me and I am able to get more done in the remaining time… by Your grace and for Your glory!  I declare this by faith!  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

This is Today’s Word!  Apply it and Prosper.
