His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
(John 2:5)
This morning we continue our new series entitled, “The Year of Supernatural Manifestation.” As I prayed over what to share with you today, the Lord led me back to a series I taught in 2005, where I covered all the miracles Jesus performed. The Lord had me to meditate on the miracles of Jesus and I feel led to teach through all of them again. We will cover the miracles over the next few weeks. The goal of this series will be to create a consciousness in your heart/mind concerning the supernatural power of God. The more open you are to God’s limitless power, the more you will see it manifested in your life.
We will begin the series with Jesus’ first miracle, turning of water into wine. John 2 opens with a wedding in the town of Cana, in Galilee. Jesus, His mother, and His disciples attended at the wedding. The wedding party ran out of wine during the feast, which was a great embarrassment. Jesus’ mother Mary may have been related to the person being married, because she was involved in the wedding. This might also explain why she came to Jesus when they ran out of wine. She was not sure what Jesus would do, but she was sure He could do something. While Jesus was fully man, He was also fully God.
At first Jesus was apprehensive about getting involved. He had already waited 30 years to begin His ministry. He knew His time was near, but He did not believe it had fully come. So, Jesus asked His mother, “Why are you telling me this?” He went on to say, “It is not yet time for me to begin my work.” But like many mothers, Mary was not moved. It’s like she did not even acknowledge Jesus’ concern. She simply looked at the servants of the wedding and said, “Do whatever he tells you.” And just like that, Jesus accepted the assignment, His ministry began, and destiny’s clock started its countdown toward the cross.
Jesus looked around and saw six large stone waterpots. These waterpots were used by the Jews in their washing ceremonies. Each one held about 20 or 30 gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the waterpots with water.” The servants obeyed Jesus and filled them to the top. Jesus then said, “Now dip out some water and take it to the man in charge of the feast.” The servants did as Jesus instructed. When the man in charge tasted it, the water had become wine. He did not know where the wine had come from, but the servants who brought the water knew. The man called the bridegroom and said to him, “People always serve the best wine first. Later, when the guests are drunk, they serve the cheaper wine. But you have saved the best for last.”
So what does this mean to you today? A few things:
- You provide the natural, God will provide the supernatural. Jesus told the servants to do something that was completely within the realm of human possibility. All they had to do was fill the pots with water. Jesus did what they could not do, and that was: turn the water into wine. My point is that when it comes to the realm of the supernatural, God will provide what you can’t. Where human ability runs out, God’s limitless power kicks in.
- Miracles are often performed “as you go”. Jesus did not stand over the water pots and say, “Hocus Pocus” or “Abracadabra”. It was not a show or a spectacle. Jesus simply told them to fill the waterpots and go and as they went, the water was turned into wine. While the servants were walking towards the ruler of the feast, I am sure they thought they were simply carrying water. But when the man tasted what was in the pot, the result was wine. Not just any wine, but the best wine. This scenario plays out today in many ways. You may have a medical condition and the Lord speaks to you and tells you that you are healed. He then instructs you to go to the doctor to get the proof. You may not feel any different in your body. You may be walking to the doctor like the servants were walking to the ruler of the feast. You may not be sure what the doctor is going to say, but when the results come back and the doctor tells you the sickness is GONE, you experience what they experienced at the wedding in Cana. A miracle was performed as you simply went on with your daily routine. It happened then and it still happens today!
- God is a God of progression and not regression. We see something in this first miracle that is worth noting. In Jesus’ day, the best wine was normally served at the beginning of weddings and as the wedding feast progressed, the quality of the wine decreased. But because of Jesus, the best was served last. Solomon said, “The end of a thing shall be better than its beginning” (Ecc 7:8). In Job the Bible says, “Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end shall greatly increase” (8:7). The Prophet Haggai said, “The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house” (2:9). My point is that God is always moving forward. So, as you enter 2017, you should do so with a “Forward ever, backward never” mentality!
Closing Confession: Father, this is a year of Great Victory for me. In this season, like the servants in the text, I will do whatever You tell me to do. I provide the natural and You provide the supernatural. I do what I can and You do what I can’t. Where my power ends, Your power kicks-in and enables me to operate in ways that exceed human ability, power and strength. I believe that Your supernatural power will be manifested in my life this year like never before. Forward ever, backward never! The best is yet to come for me! I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name, amen!
This is Today’s Word! Apply it and prosper!
