Overcoming Your Old Nature

by Rick

Today we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

Key scriptures for this year:

2 Corinthians? ?9?:?8? ?TPT??

“Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do.”

??

??Galatians? ?5?:?4? ?TPT??

“If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!”

Romans? ?6?:?14? ?ERV??

“Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God’s grace.”

??

1 Corinthians? ?15?:?10? ?NIV??

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”

Additional scriptures for today:

Galatians 5:17 TPT

“For your self-life craves the things that offend the Holy Spirit and hinder him from living free within you! And the Holy Spirit’s intense cravings hinder your old self-life from dominating you! So then, the two incompatible and conflicting forces within you are your self-life of the flesh and the new creation life of the Spirit.”

Romans 8:6 ERV

“If your thinking is controlled by your sinful self, there is spiritual death. But if your thinking is controlled by the Spirit, there is life and peace.”

Setting the Stage:

The moment you are Born-Again, you become a new creation in Christ. However, as I explained to you yesterday, this new creation lives in your old body and must deal with your old thought patterns.  This creates an internal conflict that every believer must face.  The good news is that God’s grace not only saved you but it also empowers you to win this war within.

The ERV translation of Romans 8:6 puts it plainly: ‘If your thinking is controlled by your sinful self, there is spiritual death. But if your thinking is controlled by the Spirit, there is life and peace.’ This powerful truth shows us that the outcome of our internal war largely depends on what controls our thinking.  God’s grace empowers us to yield control of our thoughts to His Spirit.

So, what does this mean to you today?  A few things.

1. Understanding That You Have Been Made NEW!

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

The foundation of winning the internal war begins with understanding who you are in Christ. Without this understanding, you’ll constantly struggle to overcome your old nature through human effort. But when you grasp your new identitysecured by grace, not works – you can begin to operate FROM a position of victory rather than constantly striving for it.

How this applies to you:

— You may not realize it at first, but once you are Born-Again, the old has truly gone. You are a completely new creation by God’s grace.

— Your position in Christ is secure, regardless of how you feel.  You may not always feel like who you are, but you are new, nonetheless.

— You are a new creation living in an old body, with old thought patterns that must be renewed.

— Your new nature in Christ desires to please God, but your old patterns resist this new nature.

— The internal conflict you experience is actually evidence that you’re alive in Christ.

— In business settings, you’ll notice new desires to lead and make decisions differently than before.

— God’s grace empowers you to overcome old habits and establish new patterns that please Him.

— Your transformation impacts every area of your life – from the boardroom to your personal relationships.

Success comes from understanding who you are in Christ and allowing His grace to work through you.  Living this way, your success is not performance-based, but grace-based. You are resting in God and evolving into the man/woman He called you to be.

2. You Have The Grace To Make Decisions That Please God.

Romans 12:2 NIV

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Every day presents multiple opportunities to choose between your old nature and your new life in Christ.  These choices aren’t just about obvious sins; they involve every decision, including how you conduct business, lead teams, and interact with others. God’s grace doesn’t just save you; it empowers you to make choices that align with His will.

How this applies to you:

— Your mind renewal is a continuous process that is empowered by grace.

— The second you were Born-Again, your spirit was made new. But your soul was not.  So you are a new man, living in an old body, in need of a new mind.

The more your soul (your mind, emotions, and will; your thinker, feeler, and chooser) is transformed into the image of God, the easier it will be to think like God, feel like He feels about things, and make decisions that are pleasing in His sight.  This does not happen overnight, but it does happen over time, as your mind is renewed and your soul is transformed.

— Every situation presents a choice between your old nature and your new nature in Christ.

— God’s grace enables you to choose God’s way, even when it conflicts with your old inclinations, habits, or norms.

— Your success in life is tied to consistently choosing God’s way over your way. But you will not become consistent in these decisions until you renew your mind with the Word of God. You must fill your heart with God’s Word.

— When you fill your heart with God’s Word, you: 1) learn what God said about certain things, and 2) position yourself to hear what God is saying to you in the moment. Because the more you know the Word of God, the better you will be able to discern the God of the Word.

— As you fill your heart with God’s Word and you practice being led by His Spirit, you will learn to recognize and follow divine promptings.

— Each choice for God strengthens your new nature and weakens the old patterns.

3. Embracing The Process of Transformation.

Philippians 1:6 NIV

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Many believers get frustrated because they expect instant transformation. However, God’s grace works progressively in our lives.  Just as it takes time to develop business expertise or professional skills, spiritual transformation is a process.

How this applies to you:

— You were saved in a moment, but your soul is transformed over your lifetime. The good news, as our text explains, is that God is committed to what He started in our lives.

— God Himself guarantees the completion of your transformation.

— Your confidence comes from His faithfulness, not your performance.  This is the essence of grace!

— The more you meditate and medicate on God’s Word, the more you will build new neural pathways that make it easier for you to discern God’s voice. And you can rest in the fact that God is committed to helping you through the process.

God’s commitment to complete His work in you means you can rest in His timing and trust His process.

— Your transformation is not dependent on your perfect performance but on His perfect faithfulness.

— Every step forward, no matter how small, is evidence of God continuing His good work in you.

4. Operating in Grace-Based Victory.

2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

Victory in the internal war isn’t achieved through willpower or determination.  It comes through complete reliance on God’s grace. When you understand this, you stop trying to overcome in your own strength and start resting in what God has already provided.  This is how you experience consistent victory in both your spiritual life and professional endeavors.

How this applies to you:

— Your weaknesses become opportunities for God’s power to shine.

When you fully embrace the grace of God, you can do like Paul did and actually boast in your weaknesses. When people come to me and compliment me on any given thing, I love telling them how woefully inadequate I am outside of the grace of God.

— I am not ashamed to say what Jesus said, “Without God, I can do nothing!” Now, the good news is that with Him, I can do all things!

— Grace is most evident when you acknowledge your need for it.

— You must get to the point where you are okay with acknowledging that victory comes through God’s grace, not your effort.

— Like Paul, you can learn to welcome challenges because they showcase God’s supernatural power working through your natural weakness.

— When you stop hiding your inadequacies and start highlighting God’s adequacy, His grace flows freely through you.

Your testimony becomes more powerful when people can clearly see it’s God’s grace and not your ability that is producing the results.

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You for making me a completely new creation in Christ Jesus.

I declare that Your grace has already secured my position in Christ, regardless of how I feel.

As I meditate on Your Word, my mind is renewed and I am able to make decisions that please You.

I rest in knowing that You will complete the good work You started in me.

My weaknesses become platforms for Your power, and I boast gladly in them.

I acknowledge my inadequacies so Your adequacy can shine through me.

Every challenge becomes an opportunity to showcase Your grace at work in my life.

Living this way, I experience THE GRACE LIFE in 2025 and beyond and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!

I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

This is Today’s Word! Apply it and prosper!
