How to Pray (Part 1): Understanding Prayer from a Position of Grace

by Rick

Today we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

As part of this series, I am teaching you how to pray from a position of God’s grace.

Key scriptures for this year:

2 Corinthians? ?9?:?8? ?TPT??

“Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do.”

??

??Galatians? ?5?:?4? ?TPT??

“If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!”

Romans? ?6?:?14? ?ERV??

“Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God’s grace.”

??

1 Corinthians? ?15?:?10? ?NIV??

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”

Additional scriptures for today:

Genesis 1:26 KJV

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.'”

Hebrews 4:16 NIV

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Setting the Stage:

Prayer is one of the most critical aspects of our walk with God, yet it’s often the most misunderstood. Many believers approach prayer as if they’re either a) pleading with God or b) trying to convince God to do something He’s reluctant to do.  They pray from a position of need or lack, begging God to intervene. But this isn’t how God designed prayer to work. In this series, I want to help you understand what it means to pray from a position of grace – seeing prayer not as a way to get God to do something, but as a way to access what He has already done.

So, what does this mean to you today?  A few things.

1. Understanding the Original Design for Prayer.

When God created mankind, He established a specific relationship between Himself (in heaven) and man (in the earth).  Genesis 1:26 tells us that God gave mankind dominion over the earth.  This was God’s original design.

How this applies to you:

— God gave humans the legal right and authority to operate on the earth, making us stewards of this domain.

You are a spirit, you possess a soul, and you live in a physical body.  Your spirit man is your connection to heaven (God communicates with you Spirit-to-spirit), your physical body is your connection to the earth realm (getting input through your five physical senses), and in your soul (mind, emotions, and will), you decide which input you will align with (heaven or the earth).

— God put humans in charge of this planet, so He communicates with your spirit in hopes of you making a decision, in your soul, to accept what God is saying over the input your senses are giving you from this world.  The input you receive in your spirit will lead you to pray for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

— God is so committed to the system He established that He even submitted to that system when He came as a man, filled with the Holy Spirit, to redeem mankind from sin, but also to show mankind what it looks like for a human to be completed submitted to the divine impulses of the Holy Spirit. Jesus prayed.  Jesus spent time, as a human, with the Father in prayer, receiving His orders from headquarters and setting His faith in agreement for what He saw in heaven (in prayer) to manifest on the earth.  This is how we are to pray.

— While God is seeking to speak to our spirit, satan is too.  Both God and satan actively seek the agreement and cooperation of humans to operate on the earth.

— Demonic spirits don’t have the legal right to operate in the earth domain without human cooperation, which is why they seek to possess or influence humans.

— God freely offers to live inside every human who accepts Jesus as Lord.  When you are Born-Again, God’s precious Holy Spirit takes up residence in you, and His desire is for you to train your soul to obey His voice.

— Understanding this original design helps you see that prayer is not about begging God for help, but about partnering with Him to see His will established on earth.

2. Prayer Brings The Earth In Agreement With Heaven.

Prayer is not about convincing God to do something. It’s about setting your faith in agreement with heaven so it will be “on earth, as it is in heaven.” This understanding completely transforms how you approach prayer.

How this applies to you:

Prayer is your agreement with God’s plans and purposes, accessing by faith what He has already provided by grace.

— Prayer is how earth agrees with heaven, aligning your will with God’s will.

Prayer is an earthly license for heavenly interference in your situations.

— Prayer is when you exercise your legal authority on the earth to invoke heaven’s influence on the planet.

Prayer is when the creation invites the Creator to get involved in any situation.

— When you understand this, you stop praying desperate prayers and start praying confident prayers.

Prayer becomes less about getting God to move and more about discovering His plans and agreeing with what He has already done.

3. God Is Seeking Your Cooperation.

As much as you need God, He also needs you. Now, to be clear, God is God. He is not limited in any way. When I say, “He needs you,” I mean, within the context of the system He created.  While God is sovereign and can do whatever He wants, He has chosen to operate in the earth through the cooperation of humans.

How this applies to you:

— God is looking for people on earth to pray and to agree with His will for His plans to manifest in the earthly realm.

— God can work without us, but from what we see in scripture, He chooses to perform His will with our cooperation.

— When God wanted to start a nation, Abraham cooperated with Him.

— When God wanted to deliver His people from Egypt, Moses cooperated with Him.

— When God wanted to preserve His people, Esther cooperated with Him.

— When God wanted to reach the Gentiles, Paul cooperated with Him.

— God is waiting for your cooperation to make a difference in your city, your workplace, and your family. How do we know what God wants? How do we know what we must do to cooperate with Him? It is through prayer.

— When Jesus went off early in the morning to pray, it was not to ask the Father to do what He wanted.  It was to discover what the Father wanted for that day, and Jesus then simply cooperated with the Father’s plans.  In this way, prayer is not about selfish desiresIt is about discovering God’s plans and agreeing for them to manifest on the earth in the fullness of His timing.

— Without God, we cannot, but without us, God will not.  This is the partnership He designed, and this is why prayer is so important.

4. Praying From a Position of Grace.

Praying from a position of grace means you understand that God has already provided everything you need through the finished work of Jesus Christ.  You’re not praying to get God to give you something; you’re praying to access what He has already given.  You want to discover His will, and you then want His will to be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

How this applies to you:

— We have been studying the grace of God for months.  Part of God’s grace is understanding that His provision comes before your petition. He’s already made available what you’re about to ask for. If not, you are not authorized to ask for it because if you do, you are praying selfish prayer. You are not praying God’s will. You are praying your own.

— When you pray from a position of grace, you’re not trying to convince God to do something; you’re seeing to believe and receive what He’s already done.

— Praying from a position of grace means you pray with confidence, knowing God has already made provision.

This type of prayer focuses on receiving, not achieving; on accessing, not earning.

— Grace-based prayer removes the anxiety of wondering if God will answer.  The answer is already yes in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Your prayers become about the manifestation of what’s already provided, not manipulation to get God to provide.

— When you pray from this position, you’ll find greater peace, confidence, and effectiveness in your prayer life. Why? Becuase your confidence will not come from you. It will come from God.  When you know you are doing God’s will, every need that comes up is God’s bill!

Prayer is all about God’s will.  It takes faith to believe what God said, and it takes faith to attempt to receive what God said.  Sometimes, what God revealed is so big that it even takes faith for you to open up your mouth and pray for it.  Remember, God does all He does by grace, and we are to do all we do by faith!

That’s enough for today.

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You for teaching me to pray from a position of grace.

I declare that I pray with confidence, knowing You have already provided everything I need through Christ Jesus.

I approach prayer not as begging, but as accessing what Your grace has already made available to me.

My prayers come in agreement with Your plans, so Your will shall be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.

As Your will is manifested through my life, You are glorified in this world and in the world to come!

I pray from a position of victory, not striving to convince You, but agreeing with what You’ve already decided.

I am a conduit through which heaven invades the earth as I pray in alignment with Your will.

I am living THE GRACE LIFE in 2025, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!

I declare this by faith, in Jesus’ name. Amen!

This is Today’s Word! Apply it and prosper!
