How to Pray (Part 16): Prayer and Legacy

by Rick

Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

As part of this series, I am teaching you how to pray from a position of God’s grace.

Key scriptures for this year:

2 Corinthians? ?9?:?8? ?TPT??

“Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do.”

??

??Galatians? ?5?:?4? ?TPT??

“If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!”

Romans? ?6?:?14? ?ERV??

“Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God’s grace.”

??

1 Corinthians? ?15?:?10? ?NIV??

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”

Additional Scriptures for today:

(Deuteronomy 7:9 ERV)

“So remember that the Lord your God is the only God, and you can trust him! He keeps his agreement. He shows his love and kindness to all people who love him and obey his commands. He continues to show his love and kindness through a thousand generations!”

(Isaiah 59:21 NIV)

“As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the LORD. “My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the LORD.

(Psalm 78:6-7 NIV)

“So the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.”

Setting the Stage:

We’ve journeyed together through this series on grace-based prayer, learning that prayer isn’t about begging God to act but about accessing what He has already provided.  We’ve discovered that we pray from a position of victory rather than need, seeing ourselves seated with Christ in heavenly places rather than struggling alone on earth.

But there’s one final dimension of grace-based prayer we must explore: its generational impact.  When you pray from a position of grace, you’re not just changing your present circumstances—you’re establishing a legacy that will echo through the annals of time for generations to come.

Today, we’ll discover how your prayers create spiritual momentum that outlives you, establishing an inheritance and blessing for those who will come after you.

So, what does this mean to you today?  A few things.

1. Prayer Creates a Spiritual Inheritance That Outlives You.

When you learn to pray grace-based prayers, it establishes spiritual capital in your bloodline that will be producing results well after you are gone.  When you pray from grace, you are making deposits into a multigenerational account because some of what you are praying for will not manifest until your children or children’s children walk in their purpose.

How this applies to you:

Your prayers today impact people you’ll never meet. When Abraham interceded for Sodom, he had no idea his prayer would be recorded and studied thousands of years later, but here we are, still learning from his example.  Not only that, but you and I are walking in the Blessing of Abraham, thousands of years after his death, as evidence of the multigenerational impact God wants to make through His children.

— Grace-based prayers establish spiritual patterns that your children can follow.  You’re not just praying; you’re modeling how to access grace through faith—a lesson more caught than taught.

— The power of your prayers extends beyond your natural lifetime. Like Abel, who “through his faith, though he died, he still speaks” (Hebrews 11:4), your faith-filled prayers continue to speak long after you’re gone.  The Lord has spoken to me on several occasions about how much life is being impacted (now) by the prayers of my grandmother, who died when I was a child.

— God designed prayer to transcend generations. When you pray in alignment with God’s grace, you’re participating in His eternal purposes that span centuries, not just moments.

Prayer establishes spiritual strongholds of blessing where curses once reigned. Your prayers can break generational patterns of failure and establish new patterns of victory for your descendants.  Just like you can have a negative stronghold around your mind and even your family, the same can be true.  Your prayer life can establish a positive stronghold (like a fortified city) of blessing, where the enemy has a hard time getting to you and your family.

Heaven remembers what earth forgets. Your seemingly ordinary prayers are recorded in heaven’s ledger, creating an eternal record that continues to influence events long after your earthly journey ends.

2. Prayers of Faith Shape the Destiny of Unborn Generations.

When you pray from a position of grace, you’re literally changing the future by agreeing with God’s eternal purposes for your bloodline.

How this applies to you:

Your prayers are planting seeds that will bear fruit in the lives of your descendants. Just as an oak tree starts as an acorn, your simple prayers of faith start spiritual movements that grow over generations.

God hears prayers for people who don’t yet exist. When you pray for your grandchildren’s grandchildren, God—who stands outside of time—hears and begins working in response to your faith, even before these people are born.

Prayer establishes spiritual DNA that replicates in future generations. Just as physical DNA carries inherited traits, spiritual DNA carries inherited blessings activated through grace-based prayer. You can be known as a family that prays and believes God!

— When you pray from grace, you’re drafting a spiritual blueprint for your family’s future. You’re not just asking for temporary help; you’re establishing permanent patterns of blessing.

Prayer creates spiritual momentum that becomes increasingly difficult to stop. Like a massive flywheel that gains speed over time, consistent prayers gather spiritual momentum that carries forward with increasing power. I will use myself as an example. I have been preaching for 29 years. I have studied faith the entire time, and I started studying grace in earnest in 2012. Over the years, my understanding of faith and grace has grown and multiplied.  It’s like revelation is stacking on more revelation. At this point, there is no way anyone can convince me otherwise, and my life now represents the investment I have made in the world. Guess what? My prayer life is a significant part of it, and what God has done in me will not stop when I die. It will live on in my family and in the lives of those God has blessed me ot impact.

— Your children will pray more effectively because of the prayer foundation you’ve established.  Each generation builds on the spiritual victories of the previous one when prayer becomes a legacy.

God honors generational faith. Throughout Scripture, God identifies Himself as “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” showing how faith creates a compounding legacy across generations.

3. Prayers of Authority Establish Spiritual Jurisdiction Over Your Bloodline.

When you pray from a position of grace, you’re exercising the authority Christ has given you to establish divine boundaries and spiritual jurisdiction that will protect your family for generations.  You are creating spiritual territory marked by God’s presence and protection. You are saying, “My family is MARKED by God and we are protected by Him!

How this applies to you:

— Prayer activates your God-given authority over generational patterns. Some people argue that we cannot be open to generational curses, but whether you believe that or not, most will understand the power of generational patterns.  Prayer helps us to establish Godly ones.

— Grace-based prayers cancel generational assignments of the enemy. When you pray with the authority Christ has given you, you’re not just dealing with today’s battles but proactively dismantling strongholds prepared for future generations.

— Your grace-based prayers establish “no trespassing” signs in the spirit realm.  You are declaring that the Blood of Jesus covers your bloodline and is off-limits to the enemy.

— Daniel’s prayers changed the spiritual atmosphere over nations, and your prayers can establish atmospheres of faith, love, and victory that your children will inherit and then add to.

— When you pray from grace, you’re exercising dominion that God designed to increase with each generation. God never intended for the next generation to have to start where you did.

— This is the power of praying from a position of grace rather than need—you’re not begging God to protect your family; you’re standing in the authority He’s already given you and establishing jurisdictional boundaries that will benefit your generation and generations to come!

4. Prayers of Provision Release Resources for Future Generations.

When you pray from grace about provision and resources, you’re not just securing provision for today—you’re establishing channels of blessing that will flow to your descendants.

How this applies to you:

— Grace-based prayer activates God’s promise of generational wealth transfer. Proverbs 13:22 says, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children,” and prayer helps establish this inheritance.

— Grace-based prayer positions your descendants to receive divine opportunities.  Your prayers today are setting up divine appointments and open doors for people who haven’t even been born yet.  You are preparing your bloodline to walk in THE BLESSING!

Your prayers establish patterns of generosity that multiply resources. As you pray from a position of grace about provision, you create a culture of giving that ensures resources continue flowing through your family line. I am a witness.  My generosity is inspired by the Holy Spirit, but it is deeply rooted in the generosity of my grandmother (and my father’s side) and my mother.

Prayer releases wisdom for resource management that becomes a family legacy. Solomon’s prayer for wisdom resulted in principles of prosperity that have guided millions for generations, and your prayers can do the same.

Prayer establishes spiritual monuments that future generations can navigate by. Joshua set up stones of remembrance after crossing the Jordan, and your prayers establish similar markers that guide your descendants in the financial arena and any arena.

Grace-based prayer releases prophetic insight about your family’s destiny. Jacob blessed his sons with prophetic insight that shaped tribal destinies, and your prayers can release similar destiny-defining words.

Here’s what I need you to understand: When you pray from a position of grace, you’re not just changing today—you’re shaping tomorrow. Your prayers create ripples that become waves of blessing for generations to come.

Don’t settle for merely surviving today when your prayers can establish thriving for generations. Pray from grace. Pray from victory.  Pray with eternity in mind.

That’s enough for today.

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You for teaching me to pray from a position of grace and not need.

I declare that my prayers are establishing a spiritual legacy that will outlive me.

My faith-filled prayers are creating protection, provision, and purpose for generations to come.

I am establishing spiritual patterns that my descendants will build upon long after I’m gone.

My prayers are breaking negative generational patterns and establishing Godly ones of blessing.

I pray with eternity in mind, knowing my words are shaping destinies beyond my lifetime.

I am leaving a prayer legacy that will guide my family line into divine purpose and provision.

My prayers are investing in spiritual accounts that will pay dividends for generations.

I am living THE GRACE LIFE in 2025, and GREATER IS COMING for my descendants long after I’m gone!

I declare this by faith, in Jesus’ name, Amen!

This is Today’s Word! Apply it and prosper!
