How to Wait on God Without Losing Your Mind

by Rick

Today, we continue our series entitled “Laser Focus,” emphasizing living with a Laser Focus on the Fixed Purpose God established for us before the world began.

Scriptures we have been looking at all year:

(Proverbs 4:25 TPT)

Set your gaze on the path before you. With fixed purpose, looking straight ahead, ignore life’s distractions.

(James 1:2-4 TPT)

2 My fellow believers, when it seems as though you are facing nothing but difficulties, see it as an invaluable opportunity to experience the greatest joy that you can!

3 For you know that when your faith is tested, it stirs up power within you to endure all things.

4 And then as your endurance grows even stronger it will release perfection into every part of your being until there is nothing missing and nothing lacking.

(Ecc 3:1 ERV)

There is a right time for everything, and everything on earth will happen at the right time.

Focus for today:

Setting the Stage.  (From 2 Samuel 3:1-5)

Yesterday, we began discussing how God gives us grace to wait on His timing. We looked at David’s situation in Hebron, where he was already king of Judah but waiting to become king over all of Israel. Today, we’ll dig deeper into this key season of David’s life and seek to glean a few more lessons about waiting on God’s timing.

The Bible tells us that during this waiting period, “The house of David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker” (2 Samuel 3:1). This progression wasn’t instant; it happened gradually. While David waited, he wasn’t idle. He built his family, having six sons during this period. Each son represented growth, development, and progress, while David was waiting for the complete fulfillment of God’s promise.

What’s particularly noteworthy about this season is how David handled it differently from his past experiences. Previously, there were times when David got ahead of God, trying to force situations to fulfill God’s promises. But this time was different. Having learned from his past mistakes, David demonstrated mature patience. He remained in Hebron, where God told him to be, neither forcing the issue nor growing bitter in the waiting.

This passage gives us deeper insights into how we should wait for God’s timing to manifest.  It’s not just about passive waiting but about active growth and development while we wait. Yesterday, we established that God gives us grace to wait. Today, we’ll explore how to maximize that grace and grow stronger while waiting, just as David did.

So, what does this mean to you today?  A few things.

1.  God’s Timing Requires Divine Patience.

When you understand that hope deferred makes the heart sick (Proverbs 13:12), you realize why you need supernatural patience.  It’s not just about waiting; it’s about waiting without losing your joy, your peace, or your sense of purpose in the present moment.

Many Christians struggle with waiting because we try to wait with human ability. But like everything else in the Kingdom of God, waiting requires grace.

How this applies to you:

— Remember that God operates in the eternal “now” while we live in time, so what feels like a delay to us is right on schedule with God.  This also means that when God speaks it, it sounds like it will happen “NOW” because it is always now for Him. But for you, it may not happen for days, weeks, months, or years.

— Trust that when God makes you wait, He is actually protecting you from receiving the promise before you’re truly ready for it.

— Recognize that divine patience includes maintaining joy while you wait.

— When you tap into God’s grace to wait, you can wait without becoming weary, frustrated, or bitter.

— Don’t allow delays to make your heart sick with disappointment.

— Keep your hope alive without letting it consume your present.

— Learn to celebrate others’ success while waiting for your own manifestation.  This will sow seeds, so when your time comes, you will be surrounded by people who will rejoice and celebrate with you.

2.  Progress Happens Incrementally.

Sometimes, we’re so focused on the ultimate promise that we miss God’s incremental progress in our lives. Isabella and I are getting ready for our annual Strategic Planning Meeting (STP), where we review the last year of our business (all aspects) and also set vision and goals for the year(s) to come. As I reviewed what our company did in 2024, I mentioned to our team that this meeting is critical because while living the day-to-day, we often need to realize or recognize how much progress we are making.  It is only when you slow down and take inventory that you see where you are, where you are, and how far you have come.

The text tells us that David grew “stronger and stronger” during his waiting period.  This teaches us that while we’re waiting for one thing, God is developing us in many other areas. At the same time, the dynasty of Saul was growing weaker and weaker. Little by little, God was preparing David to become the King of Israel.

How this applies to you:

— Take time periodically to reflect and measure your progress – sometimes, you don’t realize how far you’ve come until you deliberately look back.

— Remember that just as David grew stronger while Saul’s house grew weaker, God is orchestrating circumstances in your favor, even when you can’t see immediate results.

— Trust God’s process of preparation. While God has prepared everything you will ever need to fulfill your divine assignment, what God is doing in your “waiting season” is preparing you for what He prepared for you.

— Keep moving forward, even if progress seems slow.

— Don’t minimize small victories because you’re waiting for bigger ones.

— Appreciate the journey as much as the destination.

3.  Maintain Your Joy and Peace While You Wait.

This is perhaps the most challenging aspect of waiting. Solomon, who learned from his father, David, wrote that “hope deferred makes the heart sick” (Proverbs 13:12). The key is learning to maintain both joy and peace while you wait. There’s almost always a gap between your prayer and its performance, between your “Amen” and your “There it is!”  During this gap, things may actually appear to get worse before they get better.  This is where you need what Paul called “joy and peace in believing” (Romans 15:13).

The combination of joy (which brings excitement) and peace (which brings serenity) creates the perfect balance needed to endure the waiting period.  Joy keeps you excited about what’s coming, while peace keeps you content where you are. This divine combination is what enables you to hold on until your change comes.

How this applies to you:

— Guard your heart against disappointment and discouragement, knowing that the gap between prayer and manifestation is normal.

— Find joy in your present blessings while believing for future promises.

— Don’t let waiting rob you of living life to the fullest today.

— Remember that your current season has purpose and value.

— Trust that God’s timing will make the wait worthwhile.

— Learn to distinguish between hope deferred (which makes the heart sick) and waiting on God’s timing (which builds patient endurance).

— Allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with supernatural joy and peace while you wait.

4.  Growth During the Gap.

The time between promise and manifestation is not empty space – it’s growing space. While David waited, he didn’t just maintain his position; he expanded his influence, built his family, and developed as a leader.  The gap between where you are and where you’re going is meant for growthYou grow into your calling!

How this applies to you:

— Use your waiting season as preparation for your next season.

— Develop new skills and strengthen existing ones while you wait.

— Build relationships that will be valuable in your next season.

— Allow God to mature your character through the waiting process.

— Focus on becoming the person who can handle the promise.

— Trust that God’s power is perfected in your patience.

— Replace human endurance with divine enablement.

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I declare that Your grace is sufficient for my waiting season.

I anchor myself in Your perfect timing, refusing to move ahead of Your plan.

I embrace both joy and peace as I wait, knowing You are working everything for my good.

I celebrate every small victory, recognizing Your incremental work in my life.

I grow stronger daily as I wait, just as David did in his season of preparation.

I maintain supernatural patience, tapping into Your divine grace moment by moment.

I walk in wisdom, understanding the difference between Your timing and mine.

I trust completely in Your process of preparation and development.

I receive fresh strength daily to stand firm until Your promise manifests.

I declare that my waiting season is producing eternal fruit in my life.

Living this way, I know GREATER IS COMING FOR ME! In Jesus’ name. Amen!

I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

This is Today’s Word.  Apply it, and prosper!
