From Slaves to Sons

by Rick

Today we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

Key scriptures for this year:

2 Corinthians? ?9?:?8? ?TPT??

“Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything —every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do.”

??

??Galatians? ?5?:?4? ?TPT??

“If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!”

Romans? ?6?:?14? ?ERV??

“Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God’s grace.”

??

1 Corinthians? ?15?:?10? ?NIV??

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

Additional scriptures for today:

Galatians 4:1-7 NLT

“Think of it this way. If a father dies and leaves an inheritance for his young children, those children are not much better off than slaves until they grow up, even though they actually own everything their father had. They have to obey their guardians until they reach whatever age their father set. And that’s the way it was with us before Christ came. We were like children; we were slaves to the basic spiritual principles of this world. But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.”

Romans 8:17 NIV

“Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

Setting the stage:

Yesterday, we saw how God’s grace took us from death to destiny. Today, we’ll see how that same grace elevated us from being slaves to becoming sons. Paul uses a powerful analogy in Galatians 4 to help us understand this transformation. He compares our situation to that of an heir who is still a child. Though the child owns everything, they’re no different from a slave until they reach maturity.  This was our condition under The Law – we were heirs with a great inheritance, but we lived like slaves because we didn’t understand our true identity.  Jesus changed all that. Through His finished work, we were elevated from servants to sons, from slaves to heirs, from the distance of rites, rituals, and routines to the intimacy of fellowship with the Father through the Holy Spirit.

So, what does this mean to you today?  A few things:

1. Understanding Our Former Condition Under The Law.

Before grace came through Jesus, God’s people were like children with a great inheritance they knew nothing about. They were technically heirs but lived like servants because they didn’t understand their true identity or inheritance.  They were called God’s people, but they worshipped Him as a distant or disconnected God.  They did not have intimacy with Him at all.

How this applies to you:

— You were born with a divine inheritance but needed Jesus to reveal it.

— Although many of us are not Israelites, for many reasons, we took on the requirements of living under The Law, and we attempted to serve God in what Paul describes as a slave mentality.

— Without a revelation of how Jesus delivered us from rites, rituals, and routines, many Christians live beneath their privileges and disconnected from their full inheritance. For them, serving God is more akin to a task or a responsibility than the relationship Jesus died to usher us into.

— The Law created distance between people and God. Many non-Jews today have taken on The Law as their requirement, which causes them to become distant from God, not realizing that Jesus closed that gap.

— Paul explains that Law-minded Christians relate to God as servants rather than sons.

— These people try to please God through performance rather than relationship.

— In the Old Testament, they did not have the Holy Spirit, so they were forced to rely on human effort alone. However, today, unfortunately, many Christians are Born-Again and filled with the Holy Spirit, but they still attempt to please God by relying on their flesh.

— As you learn to live The Grace Life, you will also learn to walk with the Holy Spirit, free from the pressure to perform.

2. The Fullness of Time Brought Freedom Through Grace.

At just the right time, God sent His Son to transform our relationship with Him. Jesus came to fulfill The Law and free us from its bondage, graduating us from slaves/servants to sons.

How this applies to you:

— Jesus transformed our relationship with God.

— Grace has elevated us from servants to sons.

— We now have intimate access to God, directly (not through a priest and not visiting His Spirit in a temple). We can go directly to the Father, in the name of the Son, with the access the Holy Spirit gives us (Spirit to Spirit).

— The Holy Spirit enables you to cry “Abba, Father.”

— You’re no longer trying to earn God’s love; you already have it.

— Your relationship with God is based on sonship, not servanthood.

— Grace gives you the confidence to approach God as your loving Father.

3. Your New Identity as a Son.

Under grace, you are no longer a slave but a son (male and female). This new identity comes with privileges and inheritance rights that servants could never claim.

How this applies to you:

— You have all the rights and privileges of a son (male and female).

— Your inheritance is secure in Christ.

— Your identity is not based on performance but position.

— You can approach God with boldness and confidence. You are part of His family.

— The Father loves you the same way He loves Jesus.

— You have the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead.

— You are filled with the same Holy Spirit Jesus was.

— You have the same faith Jesus had.

— Jesus even gave you the authority to operate in the earth in His name and to approach the Father in His name.

4. Living as an Heir of God.

As a son, you are now an heir of God and joint-heir with Jesus.  This means you have access to everything that belongs to Jesus.

How this applies to you:

— You share in Christ’s inheritance. You are JOINT (or joined) with Jesus!

— The Father withholds no good thing from you.

— You have the same access Jesus has.

— Heaven’s resources are available to you.

— You can operate in the same authority Jesus had.

— Your inheritance was secured by grace, not works.

— You can live with the confidence of knowing who you are in Christ.

— Jesus was the incarnation of God. You are the continuation of His incarnation.

— As Jesus is, so are you, in this world!

5. Grace Empowers Sonship.

The difference between knowing you’re a son and living like one is grace. Many believers know they are God’s children but still operate like servants because they haven’t fully embraced grace. Grace doesn’t just give you the position of sonship; it empowers you to live like a son.

How this applies to you:

— Grace gives you both the position and the power of sonship.

— You don’t have to earn what grace has already provided.

— Grace empowers you to live above the servant mentality.

— When a servant does something wrong, they may be afraid of their master. However, when a son does something wrong, their Father (especially ours, who operates in grace) waits for us with open arms.

— When you get a revelation of God’s grace, Your confidence comes from God’s heart towards you, not performance towards Him.

— Grace enables you to access your inheritance without fear.

— You can rest in your identity while fulfilling your purpose.

— The more sensitive you become to the divine promptings of the Holy Spirit, the more you will learn to approach God as a son daily.

That’s enough for today.

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You for elevating me from a slave to a son through Your amazing grace.

I declare that I am no longer a servant trying to earn Your love, but a son secure in Your acceptance.

I walk in the full rights and privileges of sonship, approaching Your throne with confidence.

Your Spirit in my heart cries “Abba, Father,” and I know You always hear me.

I share in Christ’s inheritance as a joint-heir, fully loved and accepted by You.

I live with my head held high, knowing I am Your child and heir.

The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in me, empowering me for greatness.

I leave an indelible mark everywhere I go because I know who I am in You.

I walk in the reality of sonship, accessing what Your grace has already provided because I am living the grace life in 2025 and beyond!

This is how I know: GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!

I declare this by faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

This is Today’s Word! Apply it and prosper!
