How to Pray (Part 7): Praying from Above

by Rick

Today, we continue our series entitled “Living the Grace Life,” where we will learn to embrace and walk in God’s unmerited, unearned, and often undeserved favor throughout 2025.

As part of this series, I am teaching you how to pray from a position of God’s grace.

Key scriptures for this year:

2 Corinthians? ?9?:?8? ?TPT??

“Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do.”

??

??Galatians? ?5?:?4? ?TPT??

“If you want to be made right with God by fulfilling the obligations of the law, you have cut off more than your flesh—you have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from the revelation of grace!”

Romans? ?6?:?14? ?ERV??

“Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God’s grace.”

??

1 Corinthians? ?15?:?10? ?NIV??

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”

Additional scriptures for today:

Ephesians 2:6 NIV

“And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.”

Colossians 3:1-2 NKJV

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Genesis 1:26-28 NIV

“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule…’ God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.'”

Setting the Stage:

So far in our study of grace-based prayer, we’ve covered understanding prayer from a position of grace, praying from grace versus need, Jesus’ finished work and our prayers, praying in alignment with heaven, accessing God’s power through grace-based prayer, and the authority we have in prayer. Today, we’ll explore what it means to pray from our seated position in heavenly places with Christ.

This concept fundamentally changes how we approach prayer. Many Christians pray as if they’re down on earth looking up to a distant God in heaven, hoping He’ll hear and respond. But the Bible tells us that when we are in Christ, we are actually seated with Him in heavenly places! This positional truth transforms our prayer life from earthly petitioning to heavenly decreeing.

So, what does this mean to you today?  A few things.

1. Understanding Your Heavenly Position.

When Paul says we are “seated with Christ in heavenly places,” he’s not speaking figuratively–he’s describing our spiritual reality. This is your current position if you are in Christ.

How this applies to you:

— You are a citizen of two realms simultaneously. Physically, you’re on earth, but spiritually, you’re already seated with Christ in heaven. This dual citizenship gives you unique advantages and responsibilities.

— You are a citizen of two realms simultaneously. Physically, you’re on earth, but spiritually, you’re already seated with Christ in heaven. This dual citizenship gives you unique advantages and responsibilities.

— I’m not praying based on my performance; I’m praying based on my position. When you understand this, everything changes about how you approach prayer.

— Your heavenly position existed before your earthly struggles. God raised you up with Christ and seated you with Him before you ever faced the challenges you’re praying about today.

— From your seated position, you see things from God’s perspective. Rather than looking at problems from below, you look at them from above, seeing them through God’s eyes.

— Your seat beside Christ at the right hand of God the Father is a place of rest, not striving. Just as Jesus sat down after completing His work, you pray from a position of finished work, not from a position of trying to make something happen.

— This seated position is not something you earn or achieve through spiritual disciplines; it was freely given to you the moment you accepted Christ. It’s part of the gift of salvation.

— Your heavenly seat is your rightful place as a joint-heir with Christ. You’re not a visitor or a guest in the heavenly realms–you have been legally positioned there.

— Praying from your heavenly position means you pray with the awareness that you’re spiritually present in the same realm where the answers already exist.

2. Praying from Above, Not from Below.

Most believers pray from an earthly perspective, looking up to heaven for help. But grace-based prayer operates from a heavenly perspective, looking at earthly situations through God’s eyes.

How this applies to you:

— When you pray from above, you’re not begging “God, please come down and help me with this problem.” Instead, you pray, “Father, thank You that I’m seated with Christ above this situation.”

— Earthly perspective says, “God, please come down and help me with this problem.” Heavenly perspective says, “Father, thank You that I’m seated with Christ above this situation.”

— Praying from above means you’re not just asking for solutions–you’re seeing from a vantage point where the solutions already exist. You’re bringing heaven’s reality to earth.

— In your heavenly seat, you’re positioned above the enemy. This is why Paul could say that God has put all things under Christ’s feet, and since you’re in Christ, they’re under your feet too.

— When you pray from above, fear and anxiety lose their grip because you’re viewing your challenges from a place of victory rather than defeat.

— Many believers ask, “God, please be with me” when boarding a plane or facing challenges, not realizing He’s already promised “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” When you understand your position, you don’t beg for what’s already given.

— You’re not praying for the victory; you’re praying from the victory. This perspective changes everything about how you approach challenges.

— Praying from heaven to earth reverses the traditional prayer approach. Instead of earth reaching up to heaven, it’s heaven’s perspective flowing down to earth through your prayers.

— This heavenly perspective gives you clarity about God’s will because you’re seeing situations from where His will is perfectly clear and already established.

3. Operating in Two Realms Simultaneously.

As a believer, you live in two realms at once: the natural and the spiritual. Learning to operate effectively in both realms is key to effective grace-based prayer.

How this applies to you:

— Though your body is on earth, your spirit is connected to heaven’s realm right now. Prayer is the bridge where these two realities collide and come together.

— When you pray, you’re not trying to build a connection to heaven–you’re acknowledging and activating the connection that already exists.

— When you pray, you’re not trying to build a connection to heaven—you’re acknowledging and activating the connection that already exists. This is a fundamental shift in understanding prayer.

— You can bring heaven’s solutions to earth’s problems because you have access to both realms. What you see in heaven through faith, you can speak into existence on earth.

— Jesus modeled this dual-realm living perfectly. He said, “I only say what I hear my Father say. I only do what I see my Father do.” He lived on earth but operated completely from heaven’s perspective.

— When challenges come, you don’t have to be limited by what you see in the natural realm. You can access heaven’s wisdom, power, and resources from your seated position.

— Operating in both realms means you don’t ignore natural realities, but you also don’t let them define your expectations or limit your prayers.

— Your prayers become most effective when you consciously pray from your heavenly position rather than just from your earthly circumstances.

4. Praying with Heaven’s Perspective.

When you pray from your seated position with Christ, you gain God’s perspective on your situation. This changes not just how you pray, but what you pray for.

How this applies to you:

— Heaven’s perspective often differs dramatically from earth’s perspective. What looks like a crisis from below may look like an opportunity from above.

— When you see as God sees, you’ll pray as God prays. Your prayers will align with His purposes rather than just your preferences.

— Praying with heaven’s perspective gives you supernatural peace even in tumultuous circumstances because you can see the bigger picture that isn’t visible from earth’s viewpoint.

— From your seated position, you can receive divine strategies and solutions that wouldn’t be apparent if you were only looking from an earthly perspective.

— Heaven’s perspective enables you to pray with faith rather than fear, because you’re seeing from a position where the victory is already secure.

— When you’re resting instead of stressing, you can receive divine strategies and solutions. Emotional turmoil blocks clear communication with God, but peace positions you to hear His voice and receive His wisdom.

— Apply this perspective to practical situations: your marriage, your health, your finances. Rather than freaking out about circumstances, ask “Father, how do You see this situation? What solutions have You already provided?”

— When you view your marriage, your health, your finances, or your ministry from heaven’s perspective, you’ll pray different prayers than when you only see them from earth’s limited view.

— Jesus taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” This prayer only makes sense when prayed from someone who can see both realms.

That’s enough for today.

Declaration of Faith:

Father, I thank You that I am already seated with Christ in heavenly places, positioned above every challenge I face.

I declare that I pray from a position of victory, not toward it, seeing my circumstances through Your eyes rather than my limited earthly perspective.

I embrace my dual citizenship, living physically on earth while spiritually positioned with Christ in heaven.

I release heaven’s solutions into my earthly situations, knowing that what is bound in heaven is bound on earth, and what is loosed in heaven is loosed on earth.

My prayers are not desperate attempts to reach up to You, but confident expressions of agreement with Your heavenly perspective.

I set my mind on things above, not on earthly problems, viewing challenges from the vantage point of Your throne.

I reject fear and anxiety, knowing that from my seated position with Christ, I can see the complete victory You’ve already secured.

My life demonstrates the reality of heaven on earth as I pray from above rather than from below.

I walk in the confidence of my heavenly position even while navigating earthly circumstances.

I am now experiencing supernatural perspective and positioning while living THE GRACE LIFE in 2025, and GREATER IS COMING FOR ME!

I declare this by faith, in Jesus’ name. Amen!

This is Today’s Word! Apply it and prosper!
